Thinset is a dry powder you mix yourself, and it's the stronger, more water-resistant choice, which is why it's the standard for anything in a shower, a floor, or an area that sees regular moisture. Mastic's convenience is real, but using it somewhere thinset should go is one of the more common mistakes that shows up in tile failures down the road.

Working time matters too, especially in a hot shop or on a slow job. Standard formulas give you more time to set tile before the mortar kicks off, rapid-set versions like Ardex S48 or Laticrete's 253 Rapid cut that time down for anyone who needs to grout the same day.
