Saw Blades, Abrasive Wheels, and Cut-Off Wheels

Wheel type isn't interchangeable, even when two wheels look similar. A flat Type 1 wheel is built for cutting only, straight into the material with the wheel's edge. A depressed center Type 27 wheel is built differently, with a recessed hub that lets it grind against a surface at an angle, something a Type 1 wheel isn't rated for and can fail dangerously if used that way. Picking the right type comes down to whether the job is cutting through material or grinding a surface down, not which one happens to fit the tool.

Wheel thickness matters within cutting wheels specifically. A slim, thin cut-off wheel removes less material as it cuts, which means a faster, cleaner cut with less waste, but it also wears down and breaks more easily than a standard thickness wheel built for repeated heavy use. Wire wheels solve a different problem entirely, stripping rust, paint, or corrosion from a surface without cutting into the material underneath it.

Handheld saws round out the page with a different category altogether. Pull saws cut on the pull stroke rather than the push, which keeps the blade in tension and produces a thinner, more precise cut than a standard push saw, particularly useful for flush trim work and fine woodworking cuts.
