Schluter's Ditra-Heat system is the one most installers reach for first, mainly because it pairs radiant heat with the same uncoupling membrane a lot of jobs are already using for waterproofing, so you're solving two problems with one install. Ardex takes a different approach with their Flexbone Heat cables, engineered with aluminum tubing to spread heat more evenly while using less wattage, and they're built to work specifically with the Flexbone membrane system. Laticrete's Strata Heat is a standalone spliceless wire system, no membrane required, which gives you more flexibility in how the cable gets laid out and spaced across the floor.

Membrane-based versus standalone cable is the real decision point in this category. A membrane system like Ditra-Heat or Flexbone locks the cable into a fixed, even pattern built into the mat itself, which makes installation more foolproof, especially for anyone doing this for the first time. A standalone cable system like Strata Heat gives you more control over spacing and layout, useful for an oddly shaped room or a spot where you want more heat concentrated in one area, but it takes a more careful hand to install correctly since you're setting the pattern yourself instead of following a pre-built mat.

Coverage and wattage matter too. Most systems run somewhere around 12 to 17 watts per square foot depending on spacing, and getting that number right against your room size is what determines whether the floor actually feels warm or just barely takes the chill off.
