Earth Augers and Post Hole Diggers

An auger digs a clean, round hole far faster than a shovel, especially for fence posts, deck footings, or planting where depth and diameter matter more than a rough dug pit. A one-man auger works well for smaller bit diameters and softer soil, since a single operator can control it without help. Larger bit diameters or harder, rockier soil call for a two-man auger instead, where a second operator helps hold the machine steady against the extra torque needed to keep cutting.

Bit diameter is the detail to match to the job before anything else. A narrow bit suits fence posts and smaller footings, while a wider bit is built for larger footings or planting holes where more soil needs to come out at once. Bits are typically sold separately from the auger itself, so the powerhead and the bit size can be matched to whatever the job calls for.
