Small Engine Fuel, Oil, and Equipment Accessories

Fuel type matters more than most people realize on a small two-stroke engine. Pre-mixed, ethanol-free fuel avoids the gumming and carburetor damage that ethanol-blended pump gas can cause in equipment that sits unused between jobs. It costs more per gallon, but it protects an engine that would otherwise need repeated cleaning or repair from stale fuel left sitting in the tank.

Oil type has to match the engine it's going into. Two-stroke oil gets mixed directly with fuel and burned along with it, since a two-stroke engine has no separate oil reservoir. Four-stroke oil works the more familiar way, filling a dedicated crankcase the way a car engine does. Bar and chain oil solves a separate problem entirely, lubricating a chainsaw's bar and chain rather than the engine itself, and it isn't interchangeable with either type of engine oil.

This page also covers the attachments that extend a power head's use beyond one tool. ECHO's PAS system in particular includes edger, trimmer, cultivator, pruner, and hedge trimmer attachments that all run off the same shaft and engine, letting one power source cover several yard tasks instead of buying a dedicated tool for each.

ECHO supplies most of the fuel, oil, and attachment selection on this page. Husqvarna adds its own fuel, oil, and battery charger lineup. Probst covers paver edge restraints for hardscape work, and Melnor rounds out hose connectors and fittings.
