Moisture Meters for Wood, Concrete, and Building Materials

Pin-type meters read moisture by driving two small needles into the material and measuring resistance between them, which gives a direct percentage reading but leaves small puncture marks behind. Pinless meters scan the surface instead, using electromagnetic signals to read moisture below the surface without marking the material, a better fit for finished wood, drywall, or anywhere visible pin marks aren't acceptable.

Concrete testing works differently from either of those. A relative humidity probe gets inserted into a drilled hole in the slab and left to equalize, giving an in-situ reading of moisture deep in the concrete rather than just the surface. That reading matters most before installing flooring, since a slab that tests above the flooring manufacturer's moisture limit can cause adhesive failure or cupping if it's covered before it's actually dry enough.
