Straight Edges & Marking Tools for Tile & Concrete Layout
A crooked line shows up everywhere downstream of it, off wall, off floor, off in a way that's hard to fix once the tile's already set. This category covers the tools that keep your lines true from the first mark, straight edges, marking gauges, and rulers for both tile layout and concrete finishing.
Barwalt dominates the straight edge side of things, and for good reason, their precision aluminum sets come in a full range of lengths, down to a 4 ft 10 in size specifically built to fit tub and shower areas where a standard 6 footer won't work. Their bent angle sets take a different construction approach, adding rigidity for anyone who needs a straight edge that won't flex under pressure during layout. Kraft Tool covers the concrete side with a magnesium straight edge, purpose-built for screeding rather than tile layout, lighter and more rigid than an aluminum equivalent.
Aluminum versus magnesium is really the material debate worth knowing here. Aluminum is the standard for most tile straight edges, strong, affordable, and stiff enough for typical layout work. Magnesium runs about 30 percent lighter than aluminum while holding up just as well, which matters more on concrete work where you're dragging a straight edge across a slab repeatedly rather than just holding it in place for a quick tile check. For tile installers, aluminum is usually the practical choice. For concrete finishers doing a lot of screeding, the lighter magnesium tool saves real fatigue over a full day.
Storage and transport matter more than people expect too, a lot of the Barwalt sets come with a vinyl tote specifically because hauling five separate straight edges loose in a truck bed gets old fast.
