Mapei and Laticrete are the two names that show up in almost every conversation about thinset, and installers tend to land firmly on one side or the other. Laticrete's 254 and 317 mortars are staples for shower and wet area work, and their glass tile adhesive gets specifically called out for how easy it is to work with. Mapei's Ultraflex line covers similar ground and has its own loyal following, especially for anyone installing over a Ditra or Kerdi membrane. Ardex fills in the specialty side with fast-setting formulas like their S48, built for glass and mosaic work where you need a shorter time to grout. Bostik's Ditra-Set is purpose-built to pair with Schluter's uncoupling membrane, worth knowing if that's the system you're installing over.

The debate that comes up more than brand loyalty, though, is mastic versus thinset. Mastic is a pre-mixed adhesive, ready to use straight from the tub, which makes it fast and mess-free for small jobs like a backsplash. Thinset is a dry powder you mix yourself, and it's the stronger, more water-resistant choice, which is why it's the standard for anything in a shower, a floor, or an area that sees regular moisture. Mastic's convenience is real, but using it somewhere thinset should go is one of the more common mistakes that shows up in tile failures down the road.

Working time matters too, especially in a hot shop or on a slow job. Standard formulas give you more time to set tile before the mortar kicks off, rapid-set versions like Ardex S48 or Laticrete's 253 Rapid cut that time down for anyone who needs to grout the same day.
