Waterproofing Membranes for Tile – Sheet, Liquid & Uncoupling Systems

Tile itself isn't waterproof, the grout lines and grout joints let moisture through eventually, which means whatever's underneath the tile is doing the actual work of keeping water out of your walls and subfloor. This category covers that layer, sheet and liquid membranes built to stop water before it becomes a problem.

Schluter and Laticrete are the two names you'll see most, and each one covers the job a little differently. Schluter's Kerdi is a bonded sheet membrane, a thin fabric-reinforced sheet that gets rolled onto the wall or floor with thinset, and it's become close to the industry standard for shower assemblies because it's predictable, it goes down the same way every time. Schluter's Ditra takes it further, an uncoupling membrane that waterproofs and manages vapor at the same time, at just 1/8" thick, so you're not adding much height to the assembly while solving three problems in one layer. For continuous-use steam rooms, their Kerdi-DS adds a vapor retarder rated for that constant moisture exposure.

Laticrete comes at it from the liquid side. Hydro Ban is their flagship, a roll-on liquid membrane that skips the sheet entirely, and it's available as a sheet membrane too if you'd rather bond it than roll it. Their 9235 goes a step further for cracked or unstable substrates, a liquid rubber polymer paired with reinforcing fabric that gives up to 1/8" of anti-fracture protection along with the waterproofing, built specifically for situations where the substrate itself might move. Mapei rounds out the category with their own liquid and sheet options for anyone who's already standardized on their thinset line.

The real decision in this category is whether you need a single product doing double duty or separate systems layered together. Schluter's Ditra waterproofs and uncouples in one membrane, which is the simpler path if you're already dealing with a wood subfloor that needs isolation from movement. Laticrete's Hydro Ban and Kerdi's sheet membrane are waterproofing only, which works fine on a stable substrate but means you'd add a separate uncoupling layer underneath if cracking or movement is a real concern. Neither approach is wrong, it comes down to what the substrate actually needs.
