Grout & Tile Cleaners for Maintenance, Haze Removal & Restoration
Finishing a tile job is only half the win, keeping it looking that way is the other half, and a lot of that comes down to using the right cleaner instead of just whatever's under the sink. This category covers everything from post-install haze removal to regular maintenance for tile that's been down for years.
Mapei's UltraCare line covers almost every situation you'll run into. The Heavy-Duty cleaner is a high-alkaline formula built to strip old wax, grease, and soap scum off neglected floors, while their Acidic cleaner goes after grout haze, mortar residue, hard water stains, and efflorescence, the stuff that shows up right after installation or from years of mineral buildup. Their Concentrated Neutral cleaner is the one for everyday use, gentle enough for sealed natural stone and won't strip a sealer the way an acidic or alkaline cleaner can. Bostik's Blaze is a go-to specifically for urethane grout haze, which regular cleaners often struggle to fully cut through.
Acidic versus neutral is really the core decision in this category. Acidic cleaners work fast on mineral deposits and grout haze, but they're aggressive, use one on the wrong surface and you can etch natural stone or damage a sealer you just paid to have applied. Neutral cleaners are the safer daily choice, they won't strip anything, but they're not going to touch a stubborn haze problem on their own. Most pros keep both around, acidic for a one-time deep clean or post-install haze, neutral for the regular maintenance after that.
One thing worth flagging: always test a new cleaner on a small hidden spot first, especially on natural stone, since what's safe on porcelain isn't always safe on marble or travertine.
