Wet or dry is the question that comes up most in this category, and it depends more on where you're working than what you're polishing. Wet pads run cooler and last longer since the water carries the heat and dust away, which makes them the better call for shop work or anything with dust control needs. Dry pads skip the water line entirely, which is why they show up more on job sites, faster setup, no mess to manage, but they wear down quicker and need a lighter touch to avoid burning the pad or the material. A lot of installers keep both on hand and pick based on the site, not a fixed preference.

Grit matters as much as wet or dry. Most polishing jobs start coarse, somewhere around 50 to 100 grit, to knock down the rough edge from cutting, then step up through the grits toward 3000 for a mirror finish. Skipping steps usually shows up as swirl marks that no amount of buffing at the end will fix.
